What Can a Cosmetic Dentist Do for You?

by Laura Jeeves

Cosmetic dentists are able to improve the overall health and appearance of patients’ teeth through many different procedures that not only result in a perfect smile, but also boost confidence and general well-being. So whether you’re looking to partially improve the look of your teeth or revamp them into that pearly white smile you’ve always wanted, it’s always worth popping in for an evaluation with a cosmetic dentist – NYC professionals are always ready to help you achieve the perfect smile!

Choosing a Procedure That’s Right for You

It can be daunting to choose between the types of procedures, so it’s important to read up on any you are considering and have a chat with a cosmetic dentist; NYC offers a great selection of dentists who can guide you through your options.

Here are some of the possible procedures that may be suggested to you:

Composites

Composites, or fillings, are a popular option to conceal cracks and imperfections in the teeth. Dentists use pigments and resin that are cured with light to fix the imperfections. They are often preferred over silver fillings for their discreet nature, as the composites blend in naturally with the rest of the teeth, making them perfect for a more subtle and natural look.

Veneers

Veneers are thin shells that are placed over the tooth to enhance the overall appearance of a smile and work to conceal issues such as discoloration and chips or cracks. Dental veneers and porcelain veneers are often the choice of patients who wish to have perfect teeth without having to drill down the original tooth.

Whitening/Bleaching

If you’re suffering with stubborn discoloration and stains that don’t seem to fade, whitening may be the best option for you. Although home treatments are widely available, and do work for some people, the best results can be achieved by a cosmetic dentist; NYC is home to a range of professionals that can get the job done faster and more effectively than home treatments. This is a great option if you are happy with the overall look of your teeth but just want to make them sparkle!

Implants

Implants are a more expensive but durable option, where a metallic root is placed into the space where the original root was and screwed into the jaw, where it eventually fuses onto the bone. A dental crown is then fixed on top to finish off the job. The process of inserting an implant is customized to every patient and it ensures a long-lasting result with enough strength to chew and bite as before.

Before deciding on how you wish to enhance your smile, it’s crucial to consult a cosmetic dentist – NYC residents are lucky to have a good number of reputable professionals who are ready and waiting to review your individual needs and then decide on a treatment plan. As well as those mentioned above, there are many other techniques and treatments to help you achieve the perfect smile.

Suicide prevention in schools

by Richard Conard

Suicide prevention and suicide prevention training have gained more attention in recent years, but youth suicide rates continue to rise. Youths are feeling hopeless and more are making plans to take their lives. An advisory on a teen mental health crisis was issued by the Surgeon General in 2021. More policies and laws have called for schools to have a more active role in positive student mental well-being. They are in a position to see those who are struggling and take steps to help them.
Preventing teen suicide in schools There are a lot of different programs and resources schools can take advantage of to build suicide prevention efforts. The SPTS has such resources and offers support to many schools. The idea is to have prevention policies and training in place before they are needed. Here are some steps schools can take to have a systemwide school approach to preventing suicide.

  1. Have written protocols in place if a suicide happens: When suicides happen there is a risk to other youths at the school and in the community. There should also be support for the family and friends of the deceased person. 2. Have written protocols in place for students identified as being at risk: This can include interventions, what the warning signs are, training for all staff, screening tools, what kind of follow-up is needed and such. 3. Key school-involved adults need to be engaged: This includes administrators, key visitors, teachers, parents and so on. These people need to be involved in the planning, the policy-making, the suicide prevention training, and so on. 4. Form stronger connections with the community: This includes community advocates, mental health providers, and those with access to local resources and who support school protocols with the implementation of strategies for prevention. 5. Promote factors that protect students: Activities and efforts for healthy mental well-being, strengthening relationships between adults and peers, the development of life skills and so on.

Who is more at risk? Some of the teens to watch because they are more at risk include;

? Having a gun at home ? Having a history of family violence including verbal, physical and sexual abuse ? Having suicide in the family ? Having several mental health concerns ? Being more impulsive ? Substance abuse with them or their family ? Recent loss ? Having made a suicide attempt before ? Being LGBTQIA2S

Some warning signs Things to look for include;

? Not looking after physical appearance or showering ? Not sleeping and eating or oversleeping and eating ? No longer being interested in their usual things ? Becoming withdrawn from family and peers ? Drinking and substance abuse ? Running away and acting out ? Having an over-interest in death ? Being bored ? Not responding to praise or compliments ? Lack of focus ? Not being involved in school ? Some physical complaints like headaches and stomachaches ? Taking unnecessary risks ? Making plans to commit suicide ? Cosmetic Dentistry: Managing Nerves and Anxiety

by Laura Jeeves

When it comes to getting cosmetic dental procedures done, it can sometimes be easy to feel anxious or nervous. Dental anxiety is a common reality for many, often stemming from past traumatic dental experiences. However, if you’re planning on having cosmetic dentistry, NYC has some excellent clinics that will ensure that your anxieties do not inhibit you from getting the treatments that best suit your needs.

Understanding Procedures

Cosmetic dentistry encompasses a range of dental treatments that aim to improve the appearance of teeth, including procedures that replace missing teeth, such as teeth whitening, Invisalign, veneers, implants and more. Although your nerves might hold you back from seeking treatment, they really shouldn’t because, under the care of professional dentists, all procedures should be safe, effective and as pain-free as possible. When undertaking cosmetic dentistry, NYC dentists will prioritize your oral care so that you can smile in full confidence.

It is important to learn different ways to manage and mitigate any potential fears. Some different ways you can do that is by the following.

Communicating Clearly

Choose the best cosmetic dentist NYC has to offer, one who will honor how you feel, because your comfort and safety are of paramount importance. Regular visits to the dentist (and being familiar with them) will help you combat navigating the unknown, as well as guarantee that any issues you might have can be dealt with swiftly.

Ask your dentist to talk you through procedures and be honest about what is making you nervous, because clear communication is key to a successful and stress-free visit to the dentist. Similarly, you might agree on having a signal with your dentist, like lifting your hand, if you feel uncomfortable and want to stop at any point. You should feel like you’re in control, so your dentists should ensure you feel seen and heard.

Learning to Relax

A useful tip to reduce any anxious thoughts circling around your mind is to find ways to distract yourself from the procedure. You can do this by listening to music with headphones or watching TV while being treated.

As simple as they may sound, deep and controlled breathing exercises, including meditation, are an awesome way to help stay calm during any dental procedures; they help lower the heart rate, blood pressure and release any tension in the muscles. Inhale, hold and exhale very slowly, and you will find yourself to be at peace both physically and mentally.

Considering Additional Medicines

If you’re really struggling to stay calm and control persistent nerves, your dentist may offer sedation to help make the process smoother, less daunting and less time-consuming. With sedation you will reach a state of relaxation and calm, however, a thorough consultation and examination will be necessary beforehand. Your dentist will determine which type of sedation and treatment is the best for you.

It is very important to choose a good cosmetic dentist with testimonials and a proven track record – and who is actively focused on your oral health. This is a crucial step when you’re thinking of having cosmetic dentistry. NYC has a great selection of clinics where you can have both simple and more elaborate procedures. Overcoming dental anxiety can be difficult, but the best thing to do is to talk to your dentist about what is right for you personally, so you can feel confident about making any decisions.
